Those of you who enjoy reading about "our" experiences in Turkey will certainly enjoy this book, and the letter we received from its author:

"Hi, My name is Trish Schiesser. My brother, SSGT Phillip C. Noland, AF12392047 - USAFSS (Ret) (deceased) served as a 20270 in Karamursel Det. 3, and was Unit Supervisor. for Captain Dodi Aspell (also deceased) on "C" Flight from 60-61.
I have written a book which took me 7 years of research - it is called: THESE GUYS: Cold War Stories Told by Cold War Warriors, Collected and Edited by Trish Schiesser, and it is for sale on many of the USAFSS sites and each one who has purchased it gives it high praise. Click the book's cover at right for a picture of the cover and more about the book.
I am at present having a Christmas sale of $24.00 plus $5.00 for Priority Mail in order to get it to you for Christmas - must receive your order at least five days before Christmas. If you don't want it for Christmas, just send check, up till Dec. 31, for $24.00. After Dec. 31, the book goes back to its price of $37.45.
It is filled with 240 first person stories by "guys" like you, USAFSS Intelligence Communications; WWII; Korea; Vietnam; and of course much of the cold war era. It is 718 pages long - a rather large tome and is worth every penny it costs (or your money back).
When ordering, send your check made payable to OLD LIEUTENANT PRESS, 1103 Harrell St., Portsmouth, VA 23704. Please send me your order and MAILING ADDRESS and we will send book out as your check crosses in the mail. We ordinarily use Media Mail which takes about 10 days.
This book is a treasure trove of great stories by your "guys" and has been a work of love for me. I love all you "guys."

  •   Lieutenant, USAR Lindsay Gray Discovered MerhabaTurkey.com and has submitted his initial memories of Panlandoken Turkey, nowadays a famous ski resort near Erzurum in the eastern part of the country. Back in 1974 and 1975 he was the Det. 98 Mess Officer. Click his name and read on...
  • 2/2/2010:   John Tudbury remains in Beirut, Lebanon where he's training civilian police forces. His second class is in full season with some new twists in his teaching strategies, plus they're building some new facilities for the trainees and he has shipped pictures of the training as well as the new construction. Enjoy!
  •   Les LeGear sends us his short story of being stationed at Det 5, Izmir, Turkey in 1970 and 1971 and time spent around the area including the NATO "hole in the mountain" called Disco Hit. He was on a recent cruise to Turkey when he opted for a side trip. He'll elaborate more later but gives us the facts in his recent filing.
  • Added January 2, 2010: The new tale of "Going TUSLOG" by David Mitchell is just a beginning. He promises more about his time in Ankara doing some unusual Air Force duty in 1968 and 1969. We cannot wait for more of his self-effacing writing style, and our many Ankara-based fans will enjoy what he comes up with in future additions. Meanwhile we offer this taste.
  • There's a new guy on the block. He's Jim Baldwin. His tour in the Istanbul area didn't exactly start off with a bang, but he quickly fit right in and had a productive tour in Turkey. This story was a Christmas present for us: it arrived and was added on Christmas Day.
  • Bruce Barrett joins our American Military in Turkey contributors with his take on service at Diyarbakir, located halfway between Van and Gaziantep, Turkey. It was home to TUSLOG detachments 8, 9, 59, and - around 1968 - Det. 171. The base was renamed Pirinçlik Air Base before being closed in 1997.
  • Fred and Carol Moore take us along on a Thanksgiving 2009 second visit to northern Cyprus. This time with a couple of great friends and showing us pictures of the stunning sites they visited. New 12-7-2009!
  • Our newest contributor is Lt. Neil S. Reyer, who was sent by the U.S. Air Force on a special mission: to build a hotel in Izmir, Turkey! This major project would provide transient billets for armed services member back then, and today it is a cushy, luxury hotel located on the waterfront. Hats off to Neil and his crew.
  • Roger Henry spent a remarkably short (13 month) tour in Turkey, but worked on two very different mountaintops as a Tropo power generation specialist, operating the diesel generators powering the transmitters behind giant Tropospheric Scatter antennae high above Samsun and Izmir Turkey. Roger promises more information and more photos but he's off to a good start.
  • Thomas Tipton was a young civilian boy whose father ran the "Chow Hall" and the NCO Club on the Karamursel Common Defense Istallation base, housing several TUSLOG Detachments including 3 and 28. Thomas' experiences are fast, and often random, but give a wonderful flavor of what life was like for youngsters having a very free run of the base properties. Thomas promises he'll add more reminiscences as he thinks of them.
  • Charlie Sibert takes us along for a ride on his military career in the U.S. Air Force. It's a fascinating tale of 1958-1959 at Incirlik Air Base, followed by his stint at Dreux Air Base in central France. We travel with him home on leave from Incirlik, and as he travels between Incirlik and France. We even get to take part in the USAFE Basketball Championship! Charlie offers up a very rare detail of what it's like to leave the military and the "going home" process. A great story teller with a fantastic memory - you won't believe the details he remembers. So grab a cuppa java, settle back, click on his name above, and read the saga of this personable Louisville native's story! Check back too...he and we are still adding material and photos.
  • Jack Selig is new on board MerhabaTurkey.com with reflections on his time at a Tropospheric Scatter site in a mountainous region west of Diyarbakir, Turkey. His story is pithy and fun, meaning we can't wait for further updates!
  • Alfred Cammarata has added new material to his page of stories about Iskenderun with tidbits about the Turkish Military personnel and his questionable decision to engage in a shortlived spate of "ham radio" headed "TA3GI".

Karamursel Today:

Here's a New 7-15-2008 photo of the Karamursel base. We also have a 4/9/2008 (older) aerial version here, and the original look of the site five years ago seen here. (the photos are not identical due to the fact they're taking from flyovers and therefore the trajectories are not exact.) Open both in separate web browsers and see all the new construction that has gone on. See any sights you remember "from the old days?" Caution: large photos. GoogleEarth Coordinates at American flag pole at the base Admin building: 40.696090, 29.534037)

TARGABURUN (KARGABURUN)

Jack Eckert
Stories about U.S. Coastguard life on the north coast of the Marmara Sea west of Istanbul at this Loran station. There's controversy over the T or the K spelling. In Turkish, Kargaburun means "pliers". Jack says it's "T". Coast Guard spells it with a "K". Go figure.

These military seals come from Robert Huff Designs in Memphis, Tennessee. Robert is a fan of MerhabaTurkey.com and we show his products here to thank him for his support, but more than that, we have been asked countless times if we know of places where symbols of our military service can be purchased which are of higher quality. We make no money from sales of these emblems, but we do think they are the most beautiful objects a former service member can own. Visit Robert's website to see them much larger, by Clicking here
