It's a wonderful thing that the "viewership" of our website continues to grow. We are just about to reach three quarters of a million viewers, and we have heard from hundreds of readers who not only like to read the stories, but some qualify as "fans" able to write when someone has updated their story and let us know that it either triggered memories of their own times in Turkey, or just to let us know their thoughts about the new additions. Several of our writers, have continud submissions far longer than their tours of duty: John Tudbury of Karamursel and later Iraq and now Beirut, certainly, and Fred Moore of Adana, who after his military career stayed on as a contractor in southeast Turkey. These, and many other contributors update their web pages on a frequent basis. Both enjoy traveling as well as the recounting of their jobs overseas.
Most wonderful to us are the many Turkish friends MerhabaTurkey.com has brought to us, many of whom are on Jan Claire's facebook page, and it reminds us to remind you: Don't let your military friends slip away. Just as you've wondered many times about guys those you were stationed with in Turkey, they have been wondering about you, too. You can easily start the process by clicking here. These days the web is full of search engines meant for finding people. Put someone's name in quotes in Google (i.e. "Jim Whoever") and within a 30th of a second, you'll have many exploration opportunities. Don't wonder about your old pals. It's much more gratifying to find them again and let the intervening years dissolve instantly.

3/13/2010: CMSgt. Roger G. Maynard, USAF-Ret. was a major factor in operations of the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service, having served in Turkey and other countries during his career. Sadly, we added him today to our Memoriam page as he passed away recently. His daughter, Patti notified us, and she has included AFRTS' story: HERE.
2/26/2010: Even more new material from John Tudbury this time featuring part of the civilian police training work he's doing in Beirut, Lebanon: it was pepper-spray-training day. See how the cadets reacted to it!
2/20/2010: Tony Cote served the U. S. Air Force at Samsun, Turkey, near the Black Sea's south coast, beginning in 1961. This is his story.
- Lindsey Werden joined the Army during the "Summer of Love" in 1967 and quickly found himself spending a year at Çakmakli. Here's his take on life beyond the western edge of Istanbul. And his philosopy on how he coped.
- Oscar Mark Mankopf, CW2 USAR Ret.
Originally with Signal Supply, Detachment 27, Oscar was assigned to Det. 4-3 in 1968 and traveled a boat called the Sea Kamel, meeting troops destined for Sinop, taking them there, then back to Istanbul for the next go-'round. His was a "rowdy bunch" as you'll find out in his story!
- Lieutenant, USAR Lindsay Gray Discovered MerhabaTurkey.com and has submitted his initial memories of Panlandoken Turkey, nowadays a famous ski resort near Erzurum in the eastern part of the country. Back in 1974 and 1975 he was the Det. 98 Mess Officer. Click his name and read on...
- Les LeGear sends us his short story of being stationed at Det 5, Izmir, Turkey in 1970 and 1971 and time spent around the area including the NATO "hole in the mountain" called Disco Hit. He was on a recent cruise to Turkey when he opted for a side trip. He'll elaborate more later but gives us the facts in his recent filing.
- Added January 2, 2010: The new tale of "Going TUSLOG" by David Mitchell is just a beginning. He promises more about his time in Ankara doing some unusual Air Force duty in 1968 and 1969. We cannot wait for more of his self-effacing writing style, and our many Ankara-based fans will enjoy what he comes up with in future additions. Meanwhile we offer this taste.
- There's a new guy on the block. He's Jim Baldwin. His tour in the Istanbul area didn't exactly start off with a bang, but he quickly fit right in and had a productive tour in Turkey. This story was a Christmas present for us: it arrived and was added on Christmas Day.
- Bruce Barrett joins our American Military in Turkey contributors with his take on service at Diyarbakir, located halfway between Van and Gaziantep, Turkey. It was home to TUSLOG detachments 8, 9, 59, and - around 1968 - Det. 171. The base was renamed Pirinçlik Air Base before being closed in 1997.
- Fred and Carol Moore take us along on a Thanksgiving 2009 second visit to northern Cyprus. This time with a couple of great friends and showing us pictures of the stunning sites they visited. New 12-7-2009!
- Our newest contributor is Lt. Neil S. Reyer, who was sent by the U.S. Air Force on a special mission: to build a hotel in Izmir, Turkey! This major project would provide transient billets for armed services member back then, and today it is a cushy, luxury hotel located on the waterfront. Hats off to Neil and his crew.

TARGABURUN (KARGABURUN)
|
Jack Eckert Stories about U.S. Coastguard life on the north coast of the Marmara Sea west of Istanbul at this Loran station. There's controversy over the T or the K spelling. In Turkish, Kargaburun means "pliers". Jack says it's "T". Coast Guard spells it with a "K". Go figure. |

These military seals come from Robert Huff Designs in Memphis, Tennessee. Robert is a fan of MerhabaTurkey.com and we show his products here to thank him for his support, but more than that, we have been asked countless times if we know of places where symbols of our military service can be purchased which are of higher quality. We make no money from sales of these emblems, but we do think they are the most beautiful objects a former service member can own. Visit Robert's website to see them much larger, by Clicking here
